Picture book-making retreat in the heart of Rome.

You dream of creating a spellbinding picturebook, but your manuscript is still a jumble of rough sketches and voice notes on your phone. You long to see your book — exquisitely published — in bookshop windows, but you find it hard to carve out time to develop your craft. You’d love to belong to an exciting community of children’s authors and illustrators, but you’re stuck at home with no one to bounce ideas off.

Now imagine getting support and inspiration to develop your very own picture book! Think of tackling that challenging first (or twentieth!) draft in the company of like-minded creatives who cheer you on. Imagine spending a week at a rooftop studio in Rome, exploring the secrets of children’s book magic AND finishing your dummy book.

Introducing Inky Larks Retreats where you find artistic inspiration, gentle accountability, and get your story one step closer to being pitched to agents and publishers.

NEXT RETREAT Friday 17.04.26 – Wednesday 22.04.26

Retreats are a powerful and effective way to help you connect to your inner artist in a supportive environment without interruption. Every day, Dorien (together with Diletta Donati, a picture book writer with an MA in Children’s Literature), will be on hand to help you explore and grow your creative style & voice in order to craft your very best book.

She will give guidance and insight on how to make an attention-grabbing dummy or manuscript, from layout through to planning, pacing and composition. And she will share her personal experiences about working for different publishers of different sizes in different countries and how to get your foot in the door in the first place.
